There are 2 streams for caregivers to become permanent residents in Canada:

Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot
Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP)

1. Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot

These pilot programs allow you to come to Canada on an open work permit and get the experience needed to be eligible for permanent residence. It is occupation-restricted but you don’t need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to be eligible.

If you are offered a full-time job in the eligible NOC jobs (4411 and 4412) or have existing work experience in Canada, you may be eligible for permanent residence. There are different application processes, depending on the amount of experience you have as a caregiver:

2. Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP)

This program is for experienced caregivers. In order to be eligible for permanent residence, you must have 2 years or 3,900 hours of authorized full-time work experience in the LCP program. This work experience must be acquired within 4 years of your arrival in Canada.

Temporary Work

Caregivers who do not qualify for permanent residence at the moment can still apply for a work permit as a temporary foreign worker. Those with a work permit can apply for an extension of status.
